Children And Snoring

Many of us will think it is cute when our infant or child is snoring – but the louder it becomes the less funny it is. Snoring in children could be a sign that something is wrong with them. You should consider the facts and the reasons why a doctor should see any child that is snoring.

Snoring In Infants

It is not normal for an infant or any young child to be snoring. One of the most common reason for it is sinusitis or the enlargement of the adenoids. The sinusitis is able to be treated with antibiotics and decongestants.

The only way to treat the adenoids is through surgery at which time they and the tonsils will be removed. Another reason that they could be snoring is due to choanal atresia. The is when there is a congenital closure in the back of the nose and also requires surgery.

Snoring In Kids

If you have an older child that is snoring than you should pay attention to see if you are able to find signs of obstructive sleep apnea. This is when they have periods when they are sleeping that they are not breathing and will suddenly start snorting or gasping for air. This type of sleep disorder will cause hyperactivity, snoring, mouth breathing, poor performance at school, and will cause them to eat slower.

Many health experts believe that ADHD is also a cause of sleep apnea. They believe that if they were to help them to sleep and stop snoring then they would not need to use any of the special medication that is created for ADHD. The sleep apnea could be caused by an enlargement of the tonsils or adenoids.
